Bill Gates self made man
The self-made Bill Gates, whose full name is William Henry Gates III, has dominated the world’s richest list for many years at the dawn of the computer age. Together with his childhood friend Paul Allen, the billionaire founded Microsoft in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and later became the world’s largest personal computer software company. Gates was formerly the chief software architect, president, chief executive, and chairman of Microsoft. In addition to being the richest man in the world for many years, his most well-known achievement was becoming one of the pioneers of the microcomputer revolution in the 1970s and 1980s.
Operate a foundation for the benefit of the poor
Gates now runs the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, a private charity foundation founded by him and his wife full-time, dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of all mankind, eradicating extreme poverty around the world, and providing education and access to information technology for the entire United States.
“We must find a way to make capitalism serve the poor as well as the rich.” – Bill Gates
Gates retired from the Microsoft board of directors in March 2020, and currently holds only about 1% of the shares, and invests in a number of stock portfolios and other assets. He has so far donated US$35.8 billion worth of Microsoft stock to the foundation founded by the husband and wife, and has pledged to help the world fight COVID-19 by funding medical research and development, disease detection, and vaccine development.
Bill and Melinda
Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates, now divorcing, chair the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the world’s largest private charitable foundation.
On May 3, 2021, Bill and Melinda each announced on Twitter they were ending their marriage after 27 years. They will still co-chair the foundation.
Gates, who cofounded Microsoft with Paul Allen (d. 2018) in 1975, has transferred at least $5 billion worth of shares in public companies to Melinda.
Other investment
He has invested in dozens of companies including Canadian National Railway and AutoNation, and is one of the largest owners of farmland in the U.S.
